WHAT IS 5G?

It is a new generation of wireless technology. 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G collectively lead to 5G, a network designed to provide a wider range of connectivity and massive network capacity as compared to the previous networks.

It enables users the experiences of many efficient services than those provided by other networks. It is to become the new standard wireless network that can connect everything like machines, devices, etc. with higher data speeds, increased availability, and expanded reliability.

Multiple companies under the mobile ecosystem are contributing to bringing 5G to life, a network that uses the OFDM (orthogonal frequency-division) method for modulating signals across multiple channels with reduced interference; it also incorporates a kind of air-interface technology that adds to its scalability as well as reliability.

How is 5G much convenient than other networks?

The advantage of 5G over other networks is that it offers faster speed, greater capacity, and Low latency (delay in the transfer of data). It is capable to provide a unified platform that uses a better spectrum than the other networks. It can support and a 100 times increase in traffic capacity with efficient network availability. Its faster download speed validates access to improved services like multiplayer cloud gaming, real-time video translation, etc.

IS 5G ACCESSIBLE OR AVAILABLE NOW?

The world’s adaptation towards 5G is more rapid as compared to 4G. It has been deployed in almost 35 countries across the world. It was first launched by global operators in early 2019 and is expected to spread as a nationwide standard 5G network in many countries during the year 2020 and beyond. 5G is also being commercialized by several android manufacturers to facilitate its early accessibility to the users.

IS 5G DANGEROUS TO OUR HEALTH?

This matter can be quite controversial. Many online conspiracies blame it for almost everything from cancer, male infertility, disturbed sleep to even the coronavirus. But the network has proved to oppose all the claims related to its impacts on human health.  5G in its current form is being pointed as non-harmful to human health according to scientific evidence.

Like the former networks, 5G uses radio signals for transmission and receiving of data via base stations over a range of frequency bands. These radio waves are a form of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiations which include infra-red (IR), ultraviolet (UV) and visible light, FM radio, and Wi-Fi signals respectively. These waves and signals being too weak to break chemical bonds are unable to cause tissue or DNA damage, thus this eventually opposes the claim of 5G being held accountable for causing cancers.

5G is based on the low band, mid-band, high band, or millimeter waves (mmWave) among which the low band and mid-band based radio frequencies have been in use for decades. The concern is about the mmWaves which are technically called microwave so some people are worried that the waves can heat the skin like a literal microwave oven but in actual the waves are too weak to penetrate through substances like walls, leaves, clothing even leaves, so the fear of 5G being dangerous for skin cells is also not supported by any scientific evidence. Keeping it simple the power levels supported by any cell phone including those incorporating 5G network facility are not strong enough to heat human tissues.

For the sake of more authentic prove of 5G being non-effective on human health; let’s consider the declaration done by the American Cancer Society (ACS) which states that:

“The RF waves given off by cell phones don’t have enough energy to damage DNA directly or to heat body tissues. Because of this, it’s not clear how cell phones might be able to cause cancer. Most studies done in the lab have supported the idea that RF waves do not cause DNA damage.”

Apparently from this statement 5G which is based on radio waves as discussed above is not capable of causing alterations in the cell’s DNA thereby it cannot cause cancer and the waves are relatively too weak to heat the body tissues. Talking about the mild concerns then they can slightly cause heat in the eyes only if the network is accessed for wild space video broadcasting but even at this level, it won’t cause any harm to the tissues and the person would only feel the slight temperature increase in the eyes; for this, they should hold their cell phones at a slight distance from the eyes.

To sum it up because 5G is a new technology so there is little known about its potential for causing harmful effects on human health but a majority of studies confirm that there is either no risk or if any then the effect is incredibly small to lead to any fatalities.
